When you as an individual or manager go through difficult times it can be very tempting to start comparing yourself to others. As managers we compare companies’ results. As individuals we compare ourselves to someone else’s success. It is absolutely insane to do this. You have to stay focused and not get distracted from your own goals, systems and processes. Never look at anyone else’s cash register but focus only on your own end goal. If you get distracted in any way, your vision for yourself and your creative consciousness will get blurred and you will lose focus on what your end goal is and how to get there.
Spending too much time looking at others can result in a negative perception of yourself or your company. It also takes away the time and effort that could be invested in improving your own strategies, systems and processes. No one can afford this, especially not when the economy and your specific market is under threat. Difficult times create opportunities. Focusing on your “Own Cash Register” creates an opportunity to adapt to different situations and market conditions. In these circumstances you develop resilience and the ability to bounce back from any backlash. As the saying goes, “it is not the boxer in the fight, but the fight in the boxer”.
Each manager and company have their own unique challenges. What works for someone else might not necessarily be applicable to your situation. Constantly comparing yourself to others can restrain your creativity and innovative thinking. You have to trust your own instincts and come up with original solutions that suit your specific circumstances.
Remember the golden rule, do not look at anyone else’s cash register but focus on your own dream for yourself, regardless of your current circumstances. Picture your own future “Cash Register” and goals and focus on the systems and processes necessary to achieve it.
